From Jan to Oct 2023, if we look at the number of electric vehicles sold by OEM groups in the non-China market, Tesla remained at the top with a 50.0% YoY growth achieved by steady sales of Model 3/Y. Especially, Model 3 saw an increase in sales as the facelift model started delivery to customers. The VW group, to which Volkswagen, Audi, and Skoda belong, took the 2nd position, recording a 45.5% YoY growth. The VW group continued to be in an upward trend with favorable sales of ID.3/4, Audi Q4 and Q8 E-Tron, and Skoda ENYAQ. The 3rd place was taken by Stellantis Group of which BEV and PHEV models, including FIAT 500e, Peugeot e-208, Jeep Wrangler 4xe, and Grand Cherokee 4xe, maintained their solid sales.

Hyundai Motor Group posted a 13.9% YoY growth led by sales of its main models such as IONIQ 5/6 and KIA EV6 as well as Tuscan and Sportage plugin hybrid popular in overseas markets. The group, breaking the highest profit record, announced that it aimed to increase the sales of eco-friendly vehicle through strengthening hybrid line-up and increasing the global awareness of EV-dedicated brand, IONIQ.

By region, in the European market, the growth was mainly led by favorable sales of EV models by the VW and Stellantis groups. Tesla also expanded its market share in Europe by increasing its YoY sales more than two times. MG (Morris’ Garage) under the umbrella of SAIC finally settled down in the European market by selling approximately 113 k units and more in Europe only. Tesla led the North American market by selling over 630k units, while Hyundai Motor boasted a larger sales volume than that of Stellantis and GM.

In the Asia market, Hyundai Motor Group, Hyundai Motor Group kept the leading position based on its solid EV sales, followed by Nissan and Mitsubishi. In the Chinese domestic market, BYD, who has secured the market share by positioning as a premium EV brand, took No. 1 place, outperforming Tesla in terms of BEV sales in Q4 2023. Particularly, in the Asia market (excl. China), BYD sold more than 46k units from Jan to Nov 2023, gradually expanding its presence in other regions than China. Against this backdrop, attentions should be made to whether BYD, who entered the global market in earnest based on safety, quality, and price competitiveness proved in China, can continuously surpass Tesla every month and even catch up with Tesla in terms of annual total sales.
